Learning with the reindeer

Thursday january the 26. We left for a two day trip in the mountian. We stayed in a very cosy cabin. We brought with us a lot of reindeer meat witch we prepared for dinner, breakfast and late supper as well as on open fire. When we had put our luggage in the cabin, we where skiing to a little lake where we planned to meet two reindeer rangers. They came on snowscooters. They told us about their job, and they had a lesson in lassothrowing with us. They also had with them a salted and dried reindeer tight. It tasted delicious! We hope our meat will taste as good as this! When we came back to the cabin, we ate dinner. In the evening we went to a ski stadion in the "Heidal forrest". Here we where skiing a couple of hours, and we had supper. After a good night sleep and a sollid breakfast, we where ready for a lesson with horses. We learned a lot about horses and equipment. After that we rode horse and sleigh and we rode on horseback. We went skkiing back to school. It was a great trip, and we learned a lot and having a wonderfull time in the prosess. It also was very important social training for the pupils. They learned how to dress, how to make an open fire, how to pack their gear and what kind of gear they needed for this kind of trip. They had to cooperate a lot. They learned how to take care of their gear and how to drie wet clothes. They also improoved their skiing skills a lot. In short terms, they learned a lot about how to take care of themselfes outdoor in the winter. Accomplish this kind of trip takes a little bit of planning and making appointments with the ekstern partners you want to involve. My experiences is that the pupils learn a lot more on such trips than they learn a whole week at school. I´m planning a trip with my class when you are visiting us in the spring. I´m looking forward to meet all of you again. Until then: Take care! FRODE

Learning with the reindeer

Hi all! We have had a super start on our project.

January the 12. Dag Inge came and showed us a fantastic powerpoint about reindeers. We learned a lot about the life syclus of the reindeers, and we learned about hunting methodes from the end of the iceage to precent day. We also learned about reindeers all around the world and how the reindeers moved north together with the ice. Dag Inge also showed us two videos.

January the 19.

Two Butchers from Nortura Otta visited us at our school. They had a whole reindeer with them. They thought us how to slice the meat. We learned the name of all the parts of the reindeer. The pupils stayed focused the whole day. They touched and studied all the meat parts, and they listened and learned a lot from the two butchers. The pupils learned a lot (so did I), and they had a great day. The butchers finished the day by cooking a great meal for us of some of the meat. We where given all the meat to use it the next day when a cheff is coming to stay with us the whole day.

January the 20.
Cheff Bjørn Andreas Ovesen (BAO) came to visit. He had made two recipies for us to cook this day. He went throgh the recipies together with the pupils. He also had with him a cheff hat to each pupil. That was very popular. The first recipe was a reindeer casseroll. We finished it at 11. o´clock, and was ready to serve it to the whole school. It was delicious! The second recipe was salting of a reindeer tight and two reindeer hearts. The pupils loved both of these days! In spring time we will visit Nortura Otta to see how they work. We will also visit The climate park and the mountian museum. Bjørn Andreas will also come back and visit us in the spring. Next week, from thursday to friday, me and my class will stay two days in the mountian. We will sleep in a cabin. On this trip we will go skiing a lot. We will try to find the reindeers wich we know are in the area. We will have a lot of reindeer meat with us to cook, both on the open fire and in the cabins owen. We will go "nightskiing". The second day we will learn a lot about horses. We will ride both on horseback and in an open sleigh. I will write about that trip as well.

Learning with the reindeer

Hi german friends, and Happy New Year!! My class are in the beginning of a big project called "Learning with the reindeer". This is a cooporation between my class and some extern experts. Our partners are: Nortura (a big butcher firm located in our neighbour municipality), Dag Inge and the climatpark/mountian museum, Bjørn Andreas Ovesen (a proffessional cook/cheff at Spiterstulen Mountian Hotel), the Reindeer center in Dovre and Vågå reindeer rangers. This is a pilot project and is estimated to end in spring 2013. If this is a success, it will involve all 6. grades in Vågå, and it will be an anual happening. This is what we have done so far: I have made a presentation/information of the project and sent it to our partners and the school leaders (such as Hanne and her boss). Me and the partners together with the principal at my school had a meeting desember the 13. Here we discussed activities and agreed about some dates. During this autumn i have teached my pupils a lot about reindeers from stoneage to present day. January the 12. Dag Inge came and had a fantastic powerpoint presentation about reindeer in my class. At january the 19. two butchers from Nortura will come and visit my class. They bring a whole reindeer with them, and they will learn us how to cut and seperate the different parts of a reindeer. We can keep all the meat of the reindeer as we want! The pupils have to try to cut and slice the meat. Friday the 20. Bjørn Andreas (the cheff) will spend the whole day with my class. First he will help us preparate a meal with reindeer meat for the whole school to eat. After that he will help us to salt a reindeer tight, a tounge and a heart. He will also help us make some proviant of the meat that we will bring with us and eat the week after when we are going on a trip in the mountian where we will spend the night in a cabin. This is what we have done/planned to do so far. In addition we are also going to: 1. Visit the butcher firm and see how they work. 2. Visit the climatepark and the icetunnel. 3. Visit the mountian museum. 4. Visit and observe the reindeer rangers when they collect and butcher the reindeers in the mountian. 5. Visit the reindeer center in the mountian of Dovre. Two of this visits/trips will involve spending the night outdoor in tents. Thats all for now folks! Im looking forward to your visit, and really looking forward to visit your beautifull country again!! PS! I will update and load lots of pictures when i have learned to do so!! FRODE
